East of Bali

A very rich region…

Sidemen : The famous rice fields of Sidemen. You will encounter various insects and the ducks are walking in rice fields. You can also find there some coffee, snake fruit “salak”, cacao. You have a buffet restaurant with great view, the Mahagiri.

Goa lawah Temple : The Bat temple. It is one of the protective temple of Bali. It has been almost entirely renovated a few years ago. Being one of the important temple after a cremation, you will have all year long ceremonies there, mainly in the morning. The cave house hundreds of bats, that you can see from the outside and also python. But you can not go in, first because it is sacred ground and then because the smell is repulsive.
Outside the temples the sellers are a bit aggressive, but just say no and continue walking,  never say “maybe” or “later:”

Klungkung : small town, old capital of a once powerfull kingdom. There is a nice local market, which has a big section for ceremonies. In front of the market , on the West, you have the old justice court. Nice place with traditional paintings. It has also a very small museum to be seen.

Tenganan : Small traditional village. It is a village with a tradition from before the coming of Hindus from java. There are still getting married within the village and their tradition is weaving double ikat. People from the village will be your guide, it is nice and you will also see the inside of the houses. They will bring you to their shop, but no stress to buy.

Tirta Gangga : Water palace from the King of Karangasem. A nice garden in the middle of rice field. You also have 2 swimming pool with source water. And a lot of nice walks to be done in the rice field and forest wth the guides available there.
You have to try it once.

Ujung : Another water palace. By the sea this time. Nice garden.

Pura Lempuyang : 7 temples with 1700 steps until the end. Very few tourist, but a great view until the sea. You will encounter monkeys at the top. About 2 hours to go up.
Don’t forget the massage after, for your legs !!!!

Pura Besakih : Mother temple of Bali. A series of 22 temples. It is a nice place, despite the guides and all the people sometimes a bit aggressive. If you want to be quiet, take a guide, but do negotiate hard. No reason to pay the price they are asking which is way to expensive. If you don’t want any guide, just say you have already come last year, so you know. And you cannot enter the main temple unless you want to pray !!!

Gunung Batur : Second volcano in Bali in terms of height, about 1800 m. You can hike there for the sunrise. If the weather is good, an incredible view waits for you. You can see until Lombok and the volcano Rinjani there. Guide are compulsory and again, don’t forget to bargain. The real price is 250.00 rph for 4 persons + 10.000 per person in the village. You have a small tour which is easy and the big one which is a bit tougher at the end. From Padangbai and Ubud we go at 2 am.
But you can also go there just to see the volcano and not go trekking. The car can go down the crater where the lake is.

Kastala : Trekking in forest of Tenganan in order to discover the nature of Bali. Beautiful rice fields.

Lots of temples on the border of the crater to be seen…

You can also do trekking around Tirta Gangga, Tenganan and Budakeling, form a few hours to a few days…
